The idea of the NCRM videos on teaching research methods is to stimulate thinking about how we teach (and learn) social science research methods. The aim is to connect teachers of methods to ideas from other teachers gathered through the Pedagogy of Methodological Learning research project. This is part of an overall aim to build pedagogic culture in the research methods education and training arena. We include how we researched methods pedagogy as well as some of the findings and their practical application.

This video is about teaching research methods. It's one of a series and the focus of this video today is on the methods that we used in the study which was around the teaching of research methods, so lots of methods about methods. I worked on the pedagogy of methodological learning study with my colleague Sarah Lewthwaite and her ideas are very much in this video as well as mine.

Practical guidance from the pedagogy of methodological learning project

This is the second video in a series on this theme. The first one is around the methods that we used in our pedagogy of methodological learning study to really begin to understand and talk with and generate some evidence and pedagogical culture around the teaching of research methods. This video, the second one, is around just sharing some practical guidance with you around two core themes which come very strongly in our findings.

About the author

Melanie Nind is Professor in Education at the University of Southampton. She is also Director of the Centre for Research in Inclusion in the Southampton Education School. Melanie is one of the co-directors of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods where she leads research on the pedagogy of research methods learning working closely with Sarah Lewthwaite. She is co-editor of the International Journal of Research and Method in Education and on the international advisory or editorial boards for the British Journal of Learning Disabilities, European Journal of Special Needs Education and Disability and Society. Her recent research projects have focused on pedagogy and innovation in research methods and on quality in inclusive research.
