Content

Researchers are increasingly trying to find ways to incorporate social media data into their research. One of the challenges for qualitative research is how to gain depth in a medium more typically known for breadth. In this session we will consider the uses and limitations of social media data in qualitative research, as well as the practical and ethical modes of data collection relevant to different social media platforms. We will then discuss modes of qualitative analysis that can be used on social media data.

Exercise

We will work together to develop a design, sampling and analysis strategy for a project using social media data and discuss its strengths and weaknesses.  You are very welcome to bring your own research problem and/or data for discussion.Bringing your own wi-fi enabled laptop or tablet is highly recommended.
