Description:

ASSESS: SPSS (SPSS IBM STATISTICS) USERS GROUP
TUESDAY 26TH JUNE 2018
ONE-DAY SPSS WORKSHOP TO BE LED BY KEITH BENTLEY:
AN INTRODUCTION TO IBM SPSS FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS
UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

ASSESS is an independent user group for SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics), a computer package for analysing and presenting data. It is run by users, for users and is completely independent of manufacturers of the software.
Since 1996 ASSESS have given a wide series of one and half-day workshops at venues around the country on many areas including SPSS syntax, SPSS macros, Survival analysis in SPSS and Analysis of categorical data in SPSS.

A one day workshop is provisionally planned to be held in the Phoenix Room, Phoenix Building, University Computing Services, University of Cambridge on Tuesday 26th June 2018 led by Keith Bentley (University of Salford).
Workshop topics are at http://www.spssusers.co.uk/Events/2018/workshopannounce.html.

This all-day workshop course introduces IBM SPSS Statistics to complete beginners. The aim of the course is to give delegates with little or no computational experience the confidence and skills to be able to use the software from scratch to best utilise information obtained from surveys on crime areas, types of crime and types of people involved in crime to better inform about patterns and locations of behaviours to ultimately enable the setting of goals and strategies on a local and national level.

This is an opportunity to acquire life skills from someone uniquely qualified in the  undertaking of police work at a high level and who is an experienced teacher in the practical use of computer software and statistics.Throughout the day, (fairly basic) interactive SPSS tasks will be used to explore the points being made. The  training session will be making use of a very large data set, a copy of a British Crime Survey with over 46,000 cases and 3000 variables.

Keith Bentley, a retired senior police officer, who currently holds lectureships in the Business School and the Criminology Faculties at the University of Salford. He is a regular user of the statistical software, SPSS, and specializes in the Field of police intelligence systems.  Keith is also engaged as an intelligence expert with the European Union TAIEX organization in Brussels and has frequently assisted SPSS by delivering important lectures and workshops across Europe and Australia. Keith has given courses and talks using SPSS Statistics on shaping policy decision making which was well received by police, business and other attenders who were eager to further their own and colleagues understanding of the software.

The day will run from approximately 9-45am to 4-45pm. The booking fee includes
mid-morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea but not overnight accommodation.

Further details will be sent out to delegates upon receipt of booking forms.
