Abstract:
This masterclass will examine the potential of using secondary data from International Large-scale Assessments (ILSAs), including PISA and TIMSS. The session will begin with a pedagogical introduction to different forms of ILSA data and the data analysis requirements associated with them, including the need to account for complex sampling designs.

The session will then draw on examples from Professor Bokhove’s own research using ILSA data. Particular attention will be given to an article on teaching approaches in East Asian and Western countries, with the example illustrated through analysis in R and RStudio.

Short Bio:
Professor Christian Bokhove is Professor of Mathematics Education at Southampton Education School, University of Southampton. His research focuses on international comparisons in mathematics education, research methods, technology use in schools, and the analysis of International Large-scale Assessment (ILSA) data, including PISA and TIMSS. He has extensive expertise in quantitative methods and complex sampling designs, and regularly uses R in methodological and applied educational research.
