Description:

This module is part of a series of short (CPD - Continuous Professional Development) courses in Social/Official statistics delivered at the University of Southampton - Highfield campus.

Small Area Estimation (estimation of indicators at low levels of aggregation using survey data may be inaccurate or unfeasible due to small sample sizes) aims to provide you with an overview and a broad understanding of the methods developed in the field of Small Area Estimation (SAE) to address this issue, their motivation and applications. Examples of topics discussed are: Design vs Model-based estimation; Synthetic estimation; area-level and unit-level regression models for continuous outcomes; models for SAE of discrete responses; and use of time series data for SAE.  Lectures will be complemented with exercise sessions and computer workshops in R.

For more information see: Small Area Estimation | STAT6106 | University of Southampton

Pre-requisites

Previous knowledge of Survey Sampling and Regression methods is assumed. Typically, students would be familiar with the linear and logistic regression models, as well as the principles of survey sampling design and design-based estimation. For examples of syllabus for suitable prerequisites, see: Survey Fundamentals | STAT6093 | University of Southampton and Regression Modelling | STAT6095 | University of Southampton
