Exploring Youth Transitions and Outcomes through National Datasets
The webinar will focus on secondary, quantitative data. It will take place on Teams on the 11th of November from 12:00 – 13:30. The speakers will be:
- Pierre Walthéry who will introduce curated survey microdata available through the UK Data Service (UKDS) for researchers studying young people, with a particular emphasis on youth transitions over time. He will overview the three main types of data hosted by the UKDS : large-scale government surveys, longitudinal studies, and academic datasets deposited via ReShare. Using examples in the areas of employment, health, and education, he will illustrate how these datasets can support research into young people's experiences and outcomes. The talk will also offer practical guidance on how UK-based researchers can locate, access, and begin working with such datasets.
- Dave Thomson and Peter Urwin who will explore the use of administrative data to research transitions into and out of NEEThood, focusing on participation in education between the ages of 16 and 18. They will highlight the challenges of identifying NEET individuals during key transitions such as school to work. The session will also examine how these data can be improved and where new linkages (e.g. with the IDBR) could help overcome limitations and generate evidence to informs policy to enhance lives.
- Emily Murray who will examine the environments of English youth and their association with mental health. She draws on research linking economic, social, educational, and built environmental variables, at the lower-super output area level, to twelve waves (2009-2022) of the Understanding Society dataset. She examines whether environmental characteristics during adolescence, or socio-demographics, explain her previous findings that adolescents living in the most deprived coastal neighbourhoods in England experienced worse mental health outcomes up to 11 years later.
Each talk will be followed by a quick-fire question-and-answer section.
This is a free event.
The speakers will provide recordings of their talks which will be available after the webinar through the NCRM website. You can subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when this goes live: newsletter.
