Description:

Explore the potential for doing qualitative analysis with the aid of AI technologies in this 2-day workshop, led by professor Christina Silver, Director of the CAQDAS Networking Project and Co-Founder of Qualitative Data Analysis Services (QDAS).

This two-day seminar is designed for students and researchers who want to undertake qualitative analysis with the assistance of AI. The seminar covers the principles, practices and ethics of using these technologies throughout the analytic workflow.

A range of tools designed for qualitative analysis that harness AI in different ways are introduced and participants have the opportunity to experiment with a selection of them, using the same set of qualitative materials, so direct comparisons can be made. Tools discussed include, in alphabetical order, AILYZE, ATLAS.ti, ChatGPT, CoLoop, DiscoverText, Leximancer, LUDRA, MAXQDA, NVivo, QDA Miner, Quirkos, Reveal, and Transana. Some will be demonstrated and discussed, for others there will be hands-on exercises for participants to follow, using trial versions of the tools.

  • Session 1 provides an overview of computer-assisted qualitative analysis and the range of ways technology can assist human interpretation, putting recent AI developments into methodological context. This includes mapping the range of methodological approaches to qualitative analysis, discussing how computer-assistance relates to them, and planning for the appropriate and ethical use of AI tools.

  • Session 2 focuses on using AI tools to generate ideas for qualitative projects, such as topic guides, gathering qualitative materials, and automated transcription tools.

  • Session 3 covers AI-driven auto-coding, including sentiment analysis, topic modelling, pattern-based auto-coding and concept extraction/clustering.

  • Session 4 focuses on generative-AI tools for summarising qualitative data, and exploring content, considering the potential role of these possibilities throughout the analysis process.

  • Session 5 delves into AI-assisted coding tools, including the generation of suggestions for codes and sub-codes based on data extracts, and AI-powered coding focused around pre-specified research questions.

  • Session 6 covers auto-extraction of qualitative themes, focusing on the use of online generative-AI tools and discussing their contribution to thematic approaches to qualitative analysis.

  • Session 7 explores the use of generative-AI tools to converse with qualitative materials, and discusses the importance of appropriate prompting.

  • Session 8 wraps up the seminar by reflecting on and comparing AI-driven tools in qualitative analysis. This includes ethical considerations, how to document their use transparently, and best practices for integrating AI with human interpretation in qualitative studies. We also discuss the future of qualitative analysis in the generative-AI world, reflecting on the impact on methods of these technologies. The seminar concludes with a discussion of next steps for researchers in considering the use of AI and the practice of doing so.

*Please note that the AI tools are developing quickly, so the content of this seminar may change in response to those developments.

For all livestreaming seminars, each seminar is taught via Zoom and features take-home skill challenges, and all Zoom recordings and material (including program input, output, data, and slides) are available online for 30 days after the seminar concludes – in case you would prefer to attend asynchronously or you would like to go back and revisit the seminar content after it concludes.

An online seminar chat forum will also be monitored by the instructor for 30 days after the seminar concludes, so that you can ask questions related to seminar content outside of the live seminar sessions.

For all on-demand seminars, all videos and material (including program input, output, data, and slides) will be available for 30 days after you activate your enrolment, which you can do anytime after you purchase the on-demand seminar.
