Applying Participatory Methods for Social Change: A Hands-On Learning Session

Description:

This two-day course aims to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about and practice creative participatory methods that have been applied with people and communities to understand needs, set priorities and co-develop actions for social change. 

The methods presented will include transect walks, photovoice, body mapping, stepping stones and others. Learners will hear how researchers and community partners globally have used these methods to co-create new knowledge together and the impact these have had. They will then be provided with tools to practice these methods within a group or individually, and to reflect on being a participant, facilitator, or observer/documenter. Participants will also be involved in a discussion about power and inclusion in participatory research. 

This will be followed by hands-on experience of facilitating a co-analysis exercise, triangulating data across methods and developing themes. 

The course covers

• Overview of selected creative participatory methods and a useful toolkit
• Examples of how creative methods have been applied in projects globally
• Practical experience of implementing and reflecting on a creative method
• Theory and practice of co-analysis with communities
• Triangulation and theme development when using multiple creative methods

Practical example of how to plan and adapt methods to a project 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Choose, justify and apply different participatory methods (collective and individual) to projects
• State and define the main concepts and principles of creative participatory methods  
• Understand elements of co-analysis with communities who have different levels of capacity and skills
• Identify and demonstrate an awareness of the limitations and challenges of creative participatory methods

Cost:

The fee per teaching day is £35 per day for students / £70 per day for staff working for academic institutions, Research Councils and other recognised research institutions, registered charity organisations and the public sector / £250 per day for all other participants. In the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. NO refunds are available after this date. If it is no longer possible to run a course due to circumstances beyond its control, NCRM reserves the right to cancel the course at its sole discretion at any time prior to the event. In this event every effort will be made to reschedule the course. If this is not possible or the new date is inconvenient a full refund of the course fee will be given.
