Description:

This one-day course covers theoretical and conceptual understandings of qualitative data analytic approaches and explores practical steps and techniques involved in carrying out the analysis of textual qualitative data, with a specific focus on thematic analysis. Topics covered include: introduction to the varieties of qualitative data analysis approaches (including discursive, grounded, narrative and thematic analysis); the management, organization and preparation of data for analysis; how to carry out data analysis without software packages; focus on thematic analysis: the principles and practice of coding, identifying themes and categories; reflexivity; and opportunities for collaborative data analysis.

Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what approach is best suited for their research, and will engage in a number of practical exercises on how to carry out thematic analysis.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Be familiar with the range of ways of conducting qualitative data analysis;
  • Understand the processes of data management, preparation and organization;
