Description:
Thematic analysis is a research method for the interpretation of the content of text through the systematic classification of themes or patterns. Often used in social science research, thematic analysis is a very intuitive approach to the study of textual data which requires, nevertheless, clear analytical strategies to be properly carried out.
The first session will introduce several models of thematic analysis (i.e. inductive; network; hybrid). We will discuss how each model may be suitable (or not) to address particular types of research questions. We will also compare thematic analysis with other methods such as Grounded Theory and Content Analysis.
Exercise
The second session will focus on the application of thematic analysis in social science research. Looking at several examples of studies using this method we will discuss its advantages along with its analytical and practical limitations.
