This one-day course alerts participants to the potential of performance as a method for research in the humanities and social sciences, and the utility of performance in widely disseminating research findings. It will use the work of the course leader’s own research-led production company Sidelong Glance as a focal point for discussion. After introducing the company and its past, current, and planned future productions, Sidelong Glance founder/director Dr Eleanor Lybeck will perform the original one-woman show Wild Laughter; this performance will be followed by an audience Q&A. The second half of the course will be dedicated to the practicalities of production, including funding applications to academic and non-academic sources, and group and individual sessions during which participants will have the opportunity to discuss their ideas for performance projects emerging out of their own research.

The course covers:

  • Recent approaches to research-led performance
  • The process of making research-led performance, including writing and production
  • How to fund and promote creative research on a shoestring
  • Pitching performance as method in an academic context

By the end of the course participants will have:

  •  A grounding in the literature concerning research-led performance
  •  Considered the practicalities of producing research-led performance
  •  Trialled their own ideas for research-led performance with an experienced practitioner

The fee per teaching day is: £35 per day for students registered at a University / £75 per day for staff working for academic institutions, Research Councils and other recognised research institutions, registered charity organisations and the public sector / £250 per day for all other participants. In the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. NO refunds are available after this date. If it is no longer possible to run a course due to circumstances beyond its control, NCRM reserves the right to cancel the course at its sole discretion at any time prior to the event. In this event every effort will be made to reschedule the course. If this is not possible or the new date is inconvenient a full refund of the course fee will be given. NCRM shall not be liable for any costs, losses or expenses that may be incurred as a result of its cancellation of a course, including but not limited to any travel or accommodation costs.
