Increasingly people are looking for novel and interesting data to provide a better understanding of social issues.
Scraping data for research purposes is becoming more common and for some policy areas the only way of securing any understanding. Short-term lets, in particular Airbnb rentals, is one such area. Growth in this sector has caused issues in many cities across the world where city authorities have looked to legislate to minimise the impact. This session follows the webinar on 22 June, which uses the example of Airbnb to illustrate web scraping.

The webinar will provide a lecture-style overview of the topic with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

- Outline the main issues with the emergence of the sharing economy and the growth in Short-term lets
- Describe what data is available through scraping
- Explain the value of frequent and regular scraping on the usability of Airbnb data
- Explain the complexity of using these data both temporally and spatially
- Use data on availability (calendars) to monitor the market activity and estimate turnover
- Use reviews to understand market demand
- Estimate occupancy and income

Prior knowledge requirements
It would be useful, though not essential, for people to have attended our webinar on web scraping for research, as this covers the process of acquiring data. The presumption is that attendees of this session will be able to access data.
