Founded in 1999, our organisation is committed to improving and shaping the use of Participatory Video in all its forms, and building a grassroots movement of practice to sustain its role as a powerful community engagement tool. In this course, you will learn to adapt Design Thinking methods to the context of community-led change to create better social innovations, that have community insights and solutions at their heart. Participatory Video for Design Thinking is a new approach that is grounded in community participation. InsightShare’s Director, Chris Lunch, developed the Participatory Video for Design Thinking methodology, while a Fellow at the d.school Paris between 2017 and 2019, through numerous projects and collaborations with experts in the field. Dates The first course will take place on the following dates: 2nd, 4th, 9th, 11th and 16th February 2020 Each session will last 90 minutes.
What is Design Thinking? Design Thinking is a creative approach to problem solving, that begins with the people you are designing for and ends with new solutions tailor-made to suit their needs. Design Thinking processes begin with building deep understanding and empathy with those that will ultimately be part of any new social project, service or product that is developed. This helps the process go beyond generating ‘good ideas’, to creating a movement towards impact. When we work with communities to contextualise prototypes and test them, the movement towards impact is enhanced. Participatory Video provides a unique opportunity to deepen insights and local engagement from beginning to end.
What is Participatory Video? Participatory Video is an accessible way to bring people together to explore shared issues and voice their perspectives. It is a powerful platform to engage and mobilise traditionally underrepresented and underserved groups. The methodology is designed to empower participants to engage in learning activities and voice their stories and opinions, whilst they gain confidence in their abilities to acquire new skills, improve existing knowledge and practices, and think creatively towards innovative problem-solving.
Who is it for? Our online course and coaching service aims to support individuals, organizations, teachers or designers interested in social innovation and community development.
What will you learn? In this course, we will explore both Design Thinking and Participatory Video methodologies and look at how they can be combined. You will learn:
