Description:
The aim of this course is to understand the principles and methods used to design survey sampling schemes frequently encountered within Official Statistics, and to strengthen the knowledge of sampling methods, introducing methods of rotation sampling, permanent random number sampling, and approaches to achieve close to optimal allocation. Consideration of sampling and associated estimation methods for specific surveys run by the Office for National Statistics provides a basis for learning how to assess and compare methods critically in both social and business surveys. Lectures will be complemented with computer sessions in R.
Previous knowledge of Survey Sampling is assumed. Typically, students would be familiar at least with simple random sampling, systematic sampling, unequal probability sampling, stratified and multistage sampling, Horvitz-Thompson estimator and design-based based inference and variance estimation.
