Description:
These lectures give a brief introduction to the basic ideas of research design for experimental studies for answering causal research questions.
The definition of causal effects in the potential outcomes framework is given first, followed by a discussion of the assumptions that are necessary to obtain estimates of causal effects from observed data. Different research designs are then discussed, for both randomized experiments and some observational (i.e. non-randomized) designs. Students who are interested in learning more about causal inference and estimation from certain important specific types of observational designs are encouraged to take also the MY560 short courses on Matching methods and on Regression discontinuity designs in the Lent Term.
