Title: KEY LECTURE: Now you see it, now you don't: visual culture and visual methods
Name: Gilliam Rose
Affiliation: The Open University
Abstract Details
This paper examines the extraordinary growth in visual methods over the last decade or so across all the social sciences. It is often suggested that this growth has to do with the saturation of everyday life with images: if we live in a hypervisual culture, it is argued, then visual methods are some sort of response to that culture. The paper will interrogate just what sort of response visual methods offer to contemporary visual culture, particularly in the light of recent debates in sociology about research methods, social scientific knowledge and other knowledges of the social in contemporary 'knowing capitalism'.
