A new NCRM online resource offers support for teachers of research methods.

The free publication answers the question: “how do you spark those ‘aha’ lightbulb moments in research methods learning?”

The resource, created by the NCRM Pedagogy Network, comprises 18 short submissions on a wide range of methods and approaches.

All papers in the collection have been written by research methods teachers who are keen to share their knowledge and experiences.

Professor Melanie Nind, one of the editors of the resource, said: “The collection is a celebration of the work of the NCRM Pedagogy Network in furthering the challenge of actively building the pedagogic culture around social research methods.

“Readers might not be surprised to find powerful metaphors alongside active learning exercises and creative, adaptable workshop ideas. You can dip in and read the individual contributions that interest you here. Take a look and be inspired.”

To create the resource, the editors asked members of the network to share one tactic or task that could help other teachers.

Contributors were asked to consider the key things that enable learners to “get it” when encountering a particular topic, to cross a conceptual threshold or to have a lightbulb moment.

The editors of the collection are Professor Nind, Dr Rachel Shanks, Dr Yenn Lee and Professor Jo Edson Ferrie.

The new resource is the latest addition to NCRM’s range of materials for teachers, which are all available to access for free on the NCRM website.

Researchers interested in contributing to a second edition of the resource are invited to contact Professor Nind: M.A.Nind@soton.ac.uk.
