Supporting the teaching of research methods to postgraduate students in the Social Sciences Along with other ESRC investments such as the Researcher Development Initiative (RDI), NCRM is committed to supporting the training of trainers of postgraduate students and other researchers in the social sciences, helping them to keep abreast of developments in research methods in the social sciences. This event is designed to provide a forum for discussion of certain common issues that face people with responsibility for providing training in research methods to social scientists. It will have a balance of different activities and will provide opportunities to discuss what are the most pressing issues to be addressed as well as more specialized sessions devoted to particular methodological innovations. Three themes running through the day will be (i) how to train a group who are mixed in terms of their levels of previous knowledge, and/or their disciplinary backgrounds, and/or their levels of interest; (ii) the advantages and disadvantages of students and other trainees bringing their particular project topic and material to training sessions; and (iii) what mechanisms exist or should exist for sharing good practice in research methods training and discussion among trainers of common problems. There will be no charge for this event, but advance booking will be necessary. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided for all participants.
