Abstract Details

This session introduces the field of data and text mining and sets out the possibilities and horizons of this increasingly important area of social science. The first presentation will describe the basis of data mining in the infrastructure of computing and the new kinds of data and questions that data mining can accommodate. The second presentation is concerned with social media mining, the harvesting and partial cleaning of textual web content that is crucial to both the market research industry and increasingly other sectors. The final presentation will describe the emerging work of the Cardiff Online Social Media ObServatory (COSMOS).
