Description:

A wide range of disciplines undertake research with vulnerable populations of adults and children. This research attempts to answer challenging questions regarding their experiences, their well-being and the services they need to support them, but presents a range of ethical challenges. The Centre for Research on Children and Families at the University of East Anglia has been undertaking high-quality research with vulnerable adults and children for over 20 years. All of the research has raised significant ethical questions for the conduct of that research, including the role of stakeholders and service users in planning research; obtaining informed consent; appropriate data collection methods; the boundaries of research relationships; appropriate strategies for analysis;  and the responsibility for rigour when findings may have a direct impact on policy and practice. This advanced training day is an important opportunity for researchers to learn from research leaders in the field about the range of rigorous and creative ways in which ethical issues have been addressed in relation to a range of vulnerable and often hard to reach populations. The topics will include research on fathers in child protection, birth parents of adopted children, children in child protection and LGBTQ young people in the care system as representing a range of ethical research challenges. This event will be an important opportunity for PhD and early-career researchers to hear from research experts and to share their own research experiences, questions and dilemmas.
