Description:

This workshop is aimed at examining the trials and tribulations of doing international fieldwork. We will discuss some key epistemological and methodological paradigms related to successfully planning and conducting fieldwork in a new country/context. Topics covered will include:
-Interrogating ‘the field’
-Translating research
-Ethical dilemmas
-Gender and fieldwork
-Reflexivity and positionality in international research.
The workshop is for PhD students who are interested in the Global south as a first time researcher or are ‘going home’ to do research in a development context. It will comprise of presentations from academics and a number of peer learning panels including presentations from and discussion with PGs who have recently completed fieldwork.

Who is eligible?
Registered PhD social science students at Durham and Newcastle universities and ESRC award-holders at other ESRC-accredited institutions can also attend. An agreement also exists to enable ten students from Northumbria University to attend free of charge.
