Description:

This module introduces meta-analysis, a powerful statistical technique allowing researchers to synthesize the available evidence for a given research question using standardized (comparable) effect sizes across studies. Students will learn how to compute treatment effects, i.e. effect sizes from intervention studies, addressing questions such as ‘how effective are school-based programmes in reducing violence?’ They will also learn how to compute effect sizes based on correlational studies, addressing questions such as ‘what is the association of bullying victimization with depression?’. Students will become familiar with heterogeneity tests—how to examine whether effect sizes vary based on other factors/covariates (e.g. age; gender; ethnicity of the respondents); sub-group analysis; and meta-regression.

Prerequisites:
A clear understanding of fundamental statistical concepts, bivariate association and linear regression is necessary.
