Description:

Capturing the views and experiences of children and young people directly, rather than by proxy through parents or professionals, is increasingly recognised as critical both to social research and evaluation, and to the policy arena. While familiar methods such as questionnaires, interviews and focus groups are often used, there are specific, additional, ethical, methodological and practical considerations when working with a younger cohort, as well as common pitfalls to avoid. This course provides an opportunity for participants to learn more about these issues, and to explore how to apply them to their own work.

Topics covered

By the end of the day participants will have a better understanding and the chance to explore how to apply the following to their own areas of interest:

  • Benefits and challenges of research or evaluation with children and young people
  • Choices in relation to the involvement of children and young people in the research process
  • Ethical considerations
  • Designing appropriate research methods
  • Using creative methods
  • Key theoretical underpinning

This course is suitable for people who already have some experience of social research and/or evaluation, but want to learn more about how to apply their understanding and skills to doing research with children and young people. Please note this course is suitable for people conducting research and/or evaluation projects: both aspects are covered equally.

Those attending the course are invited to send the tutors a summary of a project they are doing or planning with children and young people, or a particular challenge they face in this field. We will try our best to incorporate issues raised on the day.
