Description:

Data from complex surveys have structural features like unequal probabilities of selection that are not catered for in the graphics capabilities of standard statistical packages but should not be ignored. Ignoring them can lead us to be very badly misled. Unmodified, many standard graphical forms like scatterplots, do not work very well for data sets. Conceptually simple enhancements like alpha-blending, zooming, and running quantiles can make a huge difference.

This workshop discusses issues with complex-survey data and large datasets and addresses them using iNZight and R (particularly R’s survey package). For the user’s viewpoint, iNZight is an easy-to-use, standalone, graphical-user-interface-driven system for statistical graphics and analysis that gives extremely fast access to a powerful suite of techniques. (In fact iNZight, and its online incarnation iNZight Lite, is a gui interface to a set of R packages which can also be called directly from R.)

Target audience: researchers and consultants who need to analyse data from complex surveys and large data sets, and people whose wish to teach such topics. Participants who are not already familiar with R will not use R.
