1-day Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis

Description:

This course provides an introduction to what is probably the most commonly used general approach in analysing qualitative data used in the social sciences; thematic analysis. The training will mainly focus on thematic approaches to analysing data from in-depth interviews although the approaches discussed can be used with transcripts from focus groups and other types of qualitative data. The course is primarily intended for researchers with no or limited experience of qualitative analysis. The day includes sessions on different approaches to analysing qualitative data, the principles of ‘grounded theory’ and the constant comparison method, the process of coding data and the development of more conceptual ideas through analysis. These sessions will be interspersed with practical exercises about different stages of analysis and will provide participants with many opportunities to analyse ‘real’ data. Issues such as validity and generalisability in the context of qualitative analysis and the presentation of qualitative research findings will be discussed as these arise during the day.

The speakers are very experienced social researchers who will draw on their own research experience as well as established practice within the social sciences.
