Description:

This course explores the usefulness in qualitative research of the idea of ‘missing data’ that is conventionally employed in quantitative research. It will consider various problems that arise in qualitative research as examples of ‘missing data’, and also the range of possible responses to these problems. The problems explored will include missing people, missing words, missing contextual information, and missing documents, as well as missed opportunities in fieldwork. It will draw on examples from ethnography, interviews, internet research, and documentary and archival research. The purpose will be not only to identify problems but also solutions that are available to overcome these problems, as well as an assessment of the argument that ‘missing data’ are inherent in qualitative research. The course will combine short presentations and activities, and participants will have the opportunity to draw on their own experiences of fieldwork and data analysis in their contributions to discussions.

The course covers:

  • The idea of ‘missing data’ and its applicability to qualitative research
  • Examples of how ‘missing data’ may arise in ethnography, interviews and other types of research
  • Possible responses to problems of ‘missing data’ in qualitative research

By the end of the course participants will:

  •  Understand how the idea of ‘missing data’ may be applied in qualitative research
  •  Have worked through various examples of ‘missing data’ arising out of different research methods
  •  Identified possible solutions to the problems that ‘missing data’ represent
  •  Discussed the view that ‘missing data’ are inherent in qualitative research
