Description:

4 hour hands-on workshop on  Participant observation. Participant observation research relies upon the capacities of the researcher-as-research-instrument. This workshop aims to develop students’ skills as sensitive, meticulous, insightful, articulate research instruments, as well as preparing them to document and write up a methodological account of their participant observation work.

We will consider the main methodological issues that a PhD thesis using participant observation may be expected to address (such as case selection, reflexivity, ethics, rigour). Participant observation data are typically recorded in fieldnotes. We will discuss a variety of approaches to writing fieldnotes, comparing different styles in the published literature.
Session Date: 10am-2pm, Wednesday 3 December 2014
**Please note that this workshop is only available to current PhD Students (failure to produce a valid student ID card will result in no admittance to the event)**

£30
