Description:

This one-day workshop is designed for PGR students in the 1st year of their research and looks at epistemological issues in development research from the perspective of social studies, natural science and economics. The workshop aims to explain and distinguish between three key terms; epistemology, methodology and methods and to outline epistemological issues of prominence in development studies. The day begins with a short interactive session assessing the basic knowledge and stance of participants with respect to epistemological issues in international development. This is followed by a general introduction to development studies, multi-disciplinary research and epistemology. The workshop is then divided into three distinct sessions led by experienced researchers in their respective fields: (1) Epistemologies and debates in social analysis (Professor Cecile Jackson) (2) The epistemology of natural science (Dr Shawn McGuire); and (3) Epistemologies in orthodox and heterodox economics (Dr Bereket Kabede). Each session will give a constructive and critical account of the strengths, weaknesses and debates around these various forms of knowledge and their links to the study of well-being, social justice and sustainability. The day concludes with a general discussion around the issues raised.
