Description:
Introduce the students to the basic ideas and theory underlying small area estimation (SAE), distinguishing between design-based and model dependent methods. Teach and practice SAE methods in common use for the prediction of small area means and proportions and for assessment of the prediction errors. Most of the course will focus on methods under the frequentist approach but Bayesian methods will also be taught. The course will include three labs and five sessions of solving exercises.
The course includes three computing lab sessions, in which the students will apply SAE programs written in R. No prior knowledge of the R language is required.
