Course Leader(s): Sonja Ellis (Sheffield Hallam University)

Aims

This workshop aims to introduce participants to Conversation Analysis (CA) as an analytic method for qualitative research and equip them with practical skills in using CA to analyse qualitative data. The workshop aims to provide a hands-on introduction to analysing qualitative data using CA. The workshop will begin with a 'whistle-stop tour' of the theoretical underpinnings and analytic tools upon which CA is based. This will involve a brief introduction to the disciplinary and epistemological roots of CA, which will be followed by an introduction to the key features of interaction as defined by CA. The latter will be illustrated with reference to data extracts. Using audio-recordings and transcripts of naturally-occurring data (e.g., emergency calls to 999/911 numbers and casual conversation) the session will, in the main, comprise hands-on work in the form of analytical exercises and systematic analyses of transcribed phone calls. This workshop will provide a solid foundation for further learning and/or advanced training in CA.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to CA. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of CA.

The Course Leader

Sonja Ellis is an experienced qualitative researcher with expertise in CA research.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The workshop will include some short lecture content, but most of the day is focused on practical demonstrations and activities and small group work, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the facilitator.
