Description:

Course Leader(s): Leah Tomkins (Middlesex University) and Johanna Spiers (Birkbeck, University of London)

Aims

This workshop provides a detailed introduction to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a method for analysing qualitative data. Participants will be guided through Smith, Flowers and Larkin’s (2009) six-step approach to IPA, using qualitative data from IPA research. We will locate IPA in relation to other methods of qualitative data analysis and highlight the unique strengths of IPA for experiential qualitative research. The workshop will explore the theoretical foundations of IPA as well as each step in the analytic process. We will engage in a number of practical coding and theme development tasks, including an exploration of different types of coding (descriptive, conceptual and linguistic), and the process of developing our initial notes and emergent themes into a coherent set of ‘super-ordinate’ themes.

The Participants

The workshop will be equally appropriate to individuals undertaking postgraduate study and experienced researchers new to IPA. Because IPA is one of the most accessible qualitative analytic methods, the workshop will also be useful for individuals working in a variety of settings who wish to develop and improve their skills in analysing qualitative data. The programme is aimed at participants with little or no knowledge or experience of IPA in particular and qualitative analysis in general.

The Course Leaders

Leah Tomkins, author of numerous papers on IPA, and Johanna Spiers, currently completing her PhD research supervised by Professor Jonathan Smith.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The workshop will include some lecture content, but most of the workshop is focused on practical activities and small group work, with lots of opportunities to seek the advice of the facilitators.
