Description:

The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) will be holding its seventh residential training event for early career researchers between November 7th and 9th 2012. This year’s Autumn School will be an exploration of structural equation modelling, led by Professor Patrick Sturgis (University of Southampton). Participants will be introduced to the principles of structural equation modelling and be given hands-on experience of fitting these models with computer software. There will be presentations from a number of experts who have applied these models in their own research to answer substantive questions, and participants will have the opportunity to take part in ‘data clinics’ to think about how they might use structural equation models in their own research and to discuss some of the methodological challenges arising from their work with both other participants and the course instructors. There will also, of course, be plenty of time for socialising and networking!

Who is it for?

The NCRM Autumn School is for post-doctoral early career researchers from across the UK social science community who are employed in research-led contracts and who often do not have the same opportunities to participate in training events. However, PhD students and junior lecturers are also eligible to apply. Autumn School participants should already be familiar with basic statistical theory, including inference and multiple linear regression, but no prior knowledge of Structural Equation Modelling, or computer software will be assumed.

How do I apply?

There are 25 fully-funded places available (to include accommodation, all meals, and reasonable travel expenses to and from Southampton). Priority will be given to NCRM researchers, but around half of the places will be available by open competition. All applicants should complete and return the registration form by Friday 21 September and applicants for the open competition will be notified whether their application has been successful shortly after this date. Full details of the final programme will also be sent to successful applicants at this point.
