RMF2012 Abstracts

Session: Wednesday 4th July PM (16.00 - 17.30)

Title: Extracting Political Information From Legislative Speeches

Name: Cheryl Schonhardt-Bailey

Affiliation: London School of Economics

Abstract Details

The papers in this session examine legislative speeches from a variety of methodological and theoretical perspectives, including the scaling of ideological positions, the quantification of conceptual and argumentative framing, critiques of automated content analysis, and the measurement of deliberation by legislators. The cases include policy debates on multiple issues in the European Union, US Senate debates on terrorism and abortion, congressional committee hearings on monetary policy, and budget debates in Ireland. These four papers provide the state-of-the art in political science approaches to measuring and analysing political speeches by legislators throughout various stages in the policymaking process.
