Description:
This course aims to demystify Social Network Analysis (SNA) and give a basic understanding of application of mathematical graph theory to social network analysis. SNA is an approach that allows researchers to quantify the pattern of relations among a set of actors. However, SNA is not essentially a quantitative method; it uses quantitative tools for qualitative case studies. It should be in the toolbox of the qualitative researcher to map the social relations behind the participant observations and interviews. The session does not require any mathematical background except basic statistics. Knowledge about some basic social science terms such as roles, groups, power will be useful.
In the first session, participants will learn the basic differences between a questionnaire-based survey data and qualitative network data, how to collect network data and how to prepare the data for analysis. Students will take away basic social network concepts such as cohesion, power, group formations and roles and positions and learn how to measure them in terms of mathematical graph indicators. A special emphasis will be given to the potential of network logic for textual analysis of word association structures.
In the second session, special attention will be given to longitudinal network analysis by RSiena.
This workshop will be taking place on Friday 26th January AND Friday 2nd February 2018 in the PhD Academy, 4th Floor of the Lionel Robbins Building, Portugal Street, London. It is expected that participants will attend both sessions.
The sessions consist of a lecture in the morning from 10am - 12pm and a practical session from 1pm 3pm.
This workshop is aimed at PhD/researcher level. Anyone below this level may find the course too challenging.
