Description:

Dr Emily Grossman - best known as a resident science expert on ITV's The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Sky1's celebrity panel-show Duck Quacks Don't Echo and the Discovery Channel's How Do They Do It - will be delivering this 2-day interactive workshop on effective science communication and public engagement.

Across the 2 days, Emily will look at the different forms that science communication can take as well as focussing on how to engage with the media and how to share complex ideas using a jargon-free, story-telling approach to engage a wide audience.

Who should attend:

This course is aimed at early career researchers, academics and research professionals. If you have a desire to improve your communication skills, to learn how to present your research in a clear and engaging way and to learn how to get the most out of working with the media, then this is the course for you.

Here's what researchers attending the last course in Sheffield had to say about Emily's training:

"It is not often that we get the opportunity to experiment, practice, explore and play when it comes to developing our skills as communicators and this course was a really safe and friendly place to do those things."

"Probably one of the best communication skills workshops I have attended. I would like to do some sort of follow up course in the future to improve my skills even more ."

"Emily was a great trainer, bringing a fun, focussed and friendly tone to the two days."

Please note:

  • There is no required knowledge or skills for attending this course, however participants are asked to prepare 2 minutes of material that you are happy to present in front of the group on day 2 and receive individual feedback on.
  • The course also includes a session on interview techniques which will involve a mock interview with the media, where you will have the opportunity to discuss your work. Participants are asked prepare some top line information with key messages that you would want the public to understand about your research/area of work.
