Description:

Interviews are one of the most common social research methods.  The qualitative interview differs from social surveys in key ways, from the degree of structure to the type and extent of interviewer interaction.  In this workshop, we will look at how qualitative interviews are conducted and the types of interviewing strategies used in qualitative research.  We will address some common problems encountered by interviewers and discuss the status of interview data in terms of representing the social worlds of participants.

We will provide an overview of the different types of interviews, consider conceptual and practical issues of conducting interview, and discuss the interviewer-interviewee relationship. We will cover issues such as constructing a topic guide and strategic concerns in interviewing.

Exercise
The exercise is built around students’ experience to date with planning, conducting and/or analysing interviews.  Students are welcome to bring their own data for discussion and troubleshooting.  We will look at some example transcripts and strategies for analysing them.
