Description:
Discourse analysis is a key methodological tool for researchers adopting constructivist and critical approaches. Discourse analysis enables us to understand how meaning is constructed in interaction as well as the role that discourse plays in the (re)production of the social and political order. The workshop will include an overview of the theoretical background underpinning discourse analysis as well as illustrations of how this method is commonly used to analyse different types of texts (conversations transcriptions, academic publications, media etc.).
Exercise
The students will prepare an outline based on their own research that they will present to the group for discussion and troubleshooting. The outlines should focus on: the research question, the theoretical approach, the mode of data collection, the relation of discourses to other elements of analysis (e.g. practices, body language, images, beliefs, perceptions) and, if available, some textual material and discourse analysis done so far. Students at the beginning of their research are very welcomed, and will contribute to the collective discussion. Most of the workshop will be spent analysing texts provided in the seminar.
