RMF2012 Abstracts

Session: Tuesday 3rd July AM (09.15 - 12.45)

Title: Challenging the Quantitative-Qualitative Divide: Exploring Causal Analysis

Name: Martyn Hammersley

Affiliation: The Open University

Abstract Details

This session clarifies the issues underpinning the distinction between quantitative and qualitative research. It will discuss the relationship between cross-case and within-case analysis, and that between variable-focused and case-focused approaches. We will show that cross-case and within-case forms of analysis are complementary. One example will be the use of qualitative case studies to draw conclusions about aggregate outcomes combined with cross-case analysis. A second example will examine the value of combining a case-focused form of cross-case analysis (crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis) with the process-tracing of within-case analysis.
