Description:
Interviewing skills are a foundation for much qualitative research. The interview is a co-construction between interviewer and interviewee, whose dynamics have to carefully managed and understood in order to produce useful data. This session covers the nuts and bolts of an interview study, equipping students with an understanding of the key methodological decisions at the stages of sampling, designing a topic guide, and conducting the interview.
The session also engages critically with the epistemological question of what kinds of claims can legitimately be made from interview data. We will debate different approaches to this question, and their implications for our methodological choices.
Exercise
Exercises explore the key methodological concerns of an interview study: sampling, constructing a topic guide, and analysing interview data. Students are welcome to raise issues from their own research practice for discussion.
