Description:

We are pleased to announce the Oxford NCRM Summer School:

An introduction to combining social science and molecular genetic research.

When: June 26-30, 2017

Where: Nuffield College, University of Oxford, UK

The programme consists of morning lectures by top scholars in the emerging field of ‘sociogenomics’, including Dalton Conley (Princeton), Ben Domingue (Stanford), Melinda Mills (Oxford), David Steinsaltz (Oxford), Meena Kumari (Essex), Cecilia Lindgren (Oxford). Afternoon lectures consist of hands-on computer lab training by Oxford-based researchers Nicola Barban, Felix Tropf, Stine Møllegaard, Maria Christodoulou and Melissa Smart (Essex), and Yanchun Bao (Essex) from Understanding Society.

The course will equip students with a unique insight into the emerging topic of sociogenomics and the most cutting-edge methodological techniques in this area of research. The focus will be on understanding the key substantive research questions in this area, an overview of UK data that is increasingly available, hands-on computer lesson of how to work with genetic data, and an introduction into the current methodological techniques used in the field.

Pre-requisite skills. The expectation is that students will have basic skills in the statistical programme R. Students who do not have these skills are still encouraged to apply, but then invited to follow an on-line pre-course tutorial.

The deadline for applications is March 30, 2017.

More information about the summer school, scholarships and how to apply can be found at: http://oxfordsociogenetics.com

The Summer School is supported by the Department of Sociology, University of Oxford, Nuffield College and the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, UK).

Cost:

The course fee is £650 per course participant. This fee includes all lunches, refreshments and some social activities over the five days, but does not include any accommodation or travel costs.

Students are eligible to apply to the NCRM Training Bursaries. For this summer school, the relevant application period is: 9am 27th March – 5pm 31st March. For eligibility criteria, please refer to the NCRM Training Bursary page.

Only students who have been selected to attend the summer school by the course organizers will be admitted, regardless of their scholarship outcome.
