This two day course is aimed at giving participants a thorough grounding in questionnaire design. This course will be highly participatory, with sessions aimed at providing hands-on experience of designing questionnaires and survey questions, for quantitative social research.

This two day course is aimed at giving participants a thorough grounding in questionnaire design. This course will be highly participatory, with sessions aimed at providing hands-on experience of designing questionnaires and survey questions, for quantitative social research.

Objectives

By the end of the two days participants should be able to:

  • design questions - that meet research objectives; taking analysis considerations into account; taking account of primacy and recency effects; which avoid ambiguous words or concepts; which avoid writing multiple questions as one question; to minimise problems of recall error and telescoping
  • design a questionnaire taking into account; the effects of question order and questionnaire flow; the needs of both coder and interviewer
  • design self-completion questionnaires that make it clear to respondents how to complete the form
  • design questionnaires for a wide range of audiences

Who will benefit?

A general familiarity with quantitative research methods is assumed, but it is not necessary to have experience of using these methods. You will find this course useful if:

  • you are new to survey research
  • you need to design survey questionnaires for the first time
  • Ruxandra you commission or manage survey research in central or local government, health or other applied policy sectors and need to understand the issues associated with questionnaire design.

Course tutors

Sophie Pilley is a Researcher in NatCen’s Questionnaire Development and Testing (QDT) Hub. She has experience in questionnaire design and cognitive testing. She has a particular interest in cognitive testing and interviewing children. Currently, she is working on the cognitive testing element of the Food and You Survey. Sophie has previously worked at Ipsos MORI working on the GP Patient Survey and evaluation projects. She has a BSc in Sociology and Social Research from the University of Surrey.

Ruxandra Comanaru is a Senior Researcher working in the Questionnaire Development and Testing Hub at NatCen. Since joining NatCen, Ruxandra has worked of a variety of projects, designing questionnaires, as well as using cognitive interviews to test and refine the questions. Prior to joining NatCen, Ruxandra was a Lecturer in Quantitative and Qualitative Social Research Methods at Birkbeck, University of London, where she also completed a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Communication.
