Description:

Applied Conversation Analysis: A workshop led by Paul Drew & Laura Thompson

Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough University, UK (in conjunction with the Advanced Research Methods Institute, LU)

This is an ESRC-supported advanced postgraduate training workshop in applied Conversation Analysis (CA), to be held in the Social Sciences Department, Loughborough University on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd February 2017. Whilst the programme will include lectures by both Paul Drew and Laura Thompson on some of the central issues in conducting applied research using CA, much emphasis will be given to practical sessions and various small-group assignments focusing on original data in a range of applied/institutional settings, including medical and social welfare (face-to-face settings), and helpline and emergency calls. So there will be plenty of opportunity for gaining hands-on experience of working with data, of developing results that have practical applications, for both practice and training.

The workshop will begin at 10.30 on the first day (2nd February) and end at 5.30pm on the second day (3rd February). There will not be any preparation necessary for the workshop – the two days will be sufficiently intensive!

There is no course registration fee for this workshop, so it is offered free of charge to all participants. 5 ESRC-funded bursaries will be available for UK students not studying at Loughborough University, to cover all travel and accommodation; these bursaries will be allocated competitively.  5 further places are reserved for Loughborough University students. Numbers will be limited so as to ensure maximum opportunities for participation and discussion, and working on data in small groups.

As this is an advanced training workshop, participants will be expected to have some background and previous training in CA, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level. If you are unsure about your eligibility, please don’t hesitate to contact Paul Drew (p.drew@lboro.ac.uk) for advice. Equally, do contact Paul Drew if you have other questions about the workshop.

Applications should be made using the form found on the Graduate School website:

http://www.lboro.ac.uk/services/graduateschool/training/esrc-advanced-training/applied-conversation-analysis/

Completed applications should be submitted to Paul Drew by the 16th December 2016. Please be sure to indicate, as requested on the form, your application category (i.e. whether UK & non-Loughborough University; or an LU student or non-UK). Those successful in their application for a travel and accommodation bursary, or for a place on the workshop (as applicable) will be notified by Friday 6th January 2017.
