Research with Children and Young People; Advanced Workshop

Description:

This course builds on the popular foundation-level course on research with children and young people and allows a more in-depth and practical focus on methodological and ethical realities and challenges, as well as taking a participative approach. Run as a workshop, the day will explore practical issues and feasible solutions relevant to each participant. Children and young people are at least as diverse as adults, if not more. So this workshop will delve deeper into how to plan, develop and adapt approaches and methods, for example by age, topic, situation and other contexts.

As well as providing input from their wide-ranging expertise, the tutors will facilitate discussions and encourage participants to share examples and collaboratively explore potential solutions. For this reason, participants are encouraged to bring issues around a research/ evaluation project you are planning or doing with children and young people, especially any methodological or ethical challenges.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop participants will:

• Be better equipped to work with diverse groups of children and young people and cover a range of topics with them
• Understand how to best apply or adapt methodological and ethical principles to their own project
• Feel more confident about the next steps

• Addressing ethical issues in practice
• Designing the best methods and tools for the young group(s) in question
• Practical steps in including children and young people and making research/ evaluation more participative

Participants will be asked to send the tutors a brief outline of their relevant research / evaluation project in advance. This will enable us to ensure that the workshop agenda addresses hurdles likely to be encountered and topics relevant to you.

Who will benefit?

This course is aimed at those who have attended the related foundation-level course within the last two years, or an equivalent course elsewhere, and who have recent experience of research and/or evaluation with children and young people. If you are not sure contact us.

Course tutors

Louca-Mai Brady is a senior researcher with many years’ experience managing, undertaking and advising on research with children, young people and families. She has particular expertise in qualitative, participative and health research, and is currently writing up a PhD on ‘embedding children and young people’s participation in health’. Berni Graham is a senior researcher with 15 years’ experience of designing, managing and conducting research and evaluation with children, young people and families and supporting others on same. Berni’s wide-ranging expertise includes: health, education, parenting, early years, carers, looked after children, welfare and disability.
