The Department of Social Policy and Criminology in partnership with the Harm and Evidence Research Collaborative (HERC) is hosting a day school in advanced research methods in critical criminology and social policy. This day school aims to enable postgraduate students to critically reflect on core themes of power, ethics and positionality in conducting research on crime, criminalization, social harm, inequalities, social justice and social policy. Plenary sessions will explore and problematize these themes in relation to researching the powerful and the powerless. Workshops will facilitate small-group, participative and in-depth exploration of how methods interact with these themes including specialist sessions on: ethical dilemmas in research, biographical and visual methods, ethnography in prisons, use of Freedom of Information requests in research and participatory action research with sexual violence survivors.
