This workshop will take place on Wednesday 10 February and consists of a lecture from 10am - 12pm and a practical session from 3pm - 5pm. Attendees are expected to attend both sessions.

Detailed Description

The changing role of the digital in the making of contemporary cultures has invited ethnographers and qualitative researchers to radically reimagine the empirical in social research. At the same time, research on digital networked media has fostered new debates in social science disciplines about the form of social relations, the making of institutions, identities, and political and economic relations.

This session explores the methodological ‘commons and borderlands' between digital and ethnographic and qualitative methodologies. The lecture addresses emergent issues in ethnographers’ and qualitative researchers’ use of digital methods to describe and engage contemporary cultures. It offers a historical and multidisciplinary overview of the transformation of ethnographic methodologies to address the emergence and centrality of the digital in social life, from early ‘netnography’ to the development of virtual ethnography, and from digital anthropology and sociology to the recent institutionalisation of the interdisciplinary field of ‘Digital Methods’. What are the implications of thinking through the digital for our traditional social research methods toolkit?
