Description:
Course Summary
Proper measurement of constructs is of utmost significance in behavioural and social sciences. This workshop aims to give students a nuanced understanding of the foundations underlying the development and validation of multi-item scales. The workshop will present a non-technical, practical overview of the principles and practices involved in scale construction, use, evaluation and interpretation. Students will be exposed to relevant theoretical approaches, both classical and contemporary, guiding the development and evaluation of measurement scales.
Course Objectives
The course aims to give students a nuanced understanding of the foundations underlying the development and validation of multi-item scales.
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Understand the importance and issues associated with proper measurement across the social sciences
- Develop advanced knowledge about how to create high quality multi-item scales
- Learn how to evaluate the quality of existing multi-items scales and how to adapt/modify original scales
Target Audience
PhD students and early career researchers with a basic understanding of construct measurement, scale development and scale validation.
Preliminary Reading
A pre-reading list of academic materials will be provided in due course.
