Description:
All aspects of research into child protection are ‘sensitive’, in terms of the subject matter, the ethics of the research, the social and political implications, and the possible impact on researchers. But some are particularly sensitive, in that they deal with notably distressing events and vulnerable people. In this one-day seminar, Professor Marian Brandon and Dr Jane Dodsworth share messages from their research into such matters. The day is divided into two parts. In the morning, Professsor Brandon will lead a session entitled ‘Managing findings, managing expectations: Researching serious child abuse for government departments’, which will draw on her research into serious case reviews. In the afternoon, Dr Dodsworth will lead a session entitled ‘Researching child sexual exploitation and sex work: Aims, challenges and realities’, which will draw on her research into this ‘hidden’ area of life; an area that has become increasingly high profile in recent years, as well as both politically and professionally contentious.
