Description:

This Language-Based Area Studies Annual Training Workshop features a keynote presentation from  Dr Claire Spencer, Head of Middle East & North Africa Programmes, Chatham House (Royal Institute for International Affairs), London.  There will also be talks from Professor David James, the Director of the ESRC Wales DTC and Swansea and Cardiff University staff and research students.

Topics to be covered during the day will include:

  • The use of foreign language skills in social science research, especially in the fields of politics and international relations;
  • Opportunities and challenges arising from the use of bilingual or multi-lingual research methods;
  • Interrogating language-specific literatures in research in the social sciences, especially in the fields of politics and international relations;

 

There will be also be an open surgery for research students to meet Dr Claire Spencer.

Cost:

ESRC and non-funded postgraduate social science research students registered at a UK HEI: conference registration fee – £25.00.

The Wales DTC is able to fund a limited number of bursaries to support the attendance of postgraduate social science research students from outside the Wales DTC institutions. Students must be currently registered at a UK HEI. The bursary is designed to help meet travel (standard/economy fares) and accommodation costs up to a maximum sum of £125.
