Description:

Qualitative in-depth interviews are a much used and useful research tool in academic and applied social research. This one-day course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative interviewing. The course is designed primarily for researchers with minimal or no experience of qualitative interviewing. However the course may also be useful for more experienced researchers who have had little formal training or who wish to reflect on their practice. The day includes sessions exploring the characteristics of qualitative research, how to prepare for an interview, tips on how to conduct interviews effectively and the development of discussion guides for interviews. The teaching sessions are interspersed with practical exercises exploring different types of interaction that might occur during an interview and various aspects of interviewing practice. Participants will be given the opportunity to carry out a practice interview, experience being interviewed and observe interviewing taking place. We will explore a variety of ethical and other issues as these arise in discussion.

The speakers are very experienced social researchers who will draw on their own research as well as established practice within the social sciences.

[Please note, the analysis of qualitative data is not covered in this course. For courses on focus groups, qualitative data analysis (1 and 2 day courses), training in qualitative software programmes and many other aspects of social research, please look at the main day courses webpage.]
