Description:

Qualitative data have been described as ‘an attractive nuisance’ – the more exploration you have done and the richer your information, the more challenging the analytic task.

The course has been designed for postgraduate students, but would also be of benefit to research commissioners and practitioners. It is appropriate for those whose data are in the form of semi-structured or in-depth interviews, focus groups or field notes, but is not geared towards the analysis of open-ended responses to questionnaire items.

The course aims are:

  • to give participants an appreciation of where thematic analysis ‘fits in’ as an approach to analyzing qualitative data
  • to outline a set of steps at the data management and interpretation stages that make the analytic process more manageable
  • to provide an opportunity for practicing these steps using qualitative data provided
